There is no one size fits all virus protection. Each
organization should have comprehensive virus protection throughout
their facilities. As technology progresses we now have an opportunity
to protect networks at several different key points to stop the
spead of virus and malicious code. There should never be a computer
on or off a corporate network without current virus protection.
Simply purchasing and installing the product is not enough, the
virus definitions MUST be kept up to date and the subscription kept
current.
We typically standardize on Symantec/Norton series
of antivirus products. Symantec is has done a very good job with
their latest Liveupdate software allowing clients to automatically
pull down updated definitions with requiring a scheduled event to
happen. The end result is your definitions are updated in the background
without your knowledge or intervention.
There are several other software publishers that deserve
mention as well, and we use/support them on occasion.
The first of which is McAffee. McAffee seems to have
been around since the first virus. They have also put together a
terrific suite of products focused on virus protection. They have
a great product, but cannot keep up with Symantec's marketing of
the Norton line.
Then there is the Trend antivirus product. This is
another company that has created a great suite of software. They
are extremely proactive with updated virus definitions and they
are my premiere source for virus removal information. Trend also
offers an online scan, if you ever find yourself in a pinch and
need a quick virusscan. The free scan can be accessed at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Whether you need virus protection on your PCs, servers,
e-mail gateways or firewalls, Langistic Networks can help you choose
and properly install the right product for your organization.
If you have found yourself in a situation where you
have infected files, and need assistance, please do not hesitate
to call us. We can have one of our engineers onsite quickly and
get your network back up and running.
